Effective Math

Effective Math Instructions
CRA instructional approach.
How can we teach math in such a way that students have a deeper understanding of the standards? By allowing them to SEE and MANIPULATE it FIRST!

Making Connections
Visual, kinesthetic, verbal, etc.
CRA is used as a bridge from the concrete stage of cognitive development to the abstract stage of development. Math is abstract. How can we get our students there?

Concrete
Students use hands on manipulative to understand the "whys" of math. Reaches the kinesthetic learners in your classroom.

Abstract
Numbers and symbols.

Checking for Understanding Integration
We will emphasize this instructional strategy that includes Higher Level Thinking Questioning Strategies.
Students are taking an active role in their learning, not being passive learners!

ALL Elementary Teachers
Effectively integrate base 10 blocks, counters, decimal bars, fraction bars/circles, pictures, money number lines, grid paper.

MS and HS Math Teachers
Effectively integrated pasta shells and cups to teach pre-algebra (algebra readiness), algebra tiles to teach algebra concepts.
